βαπτιζω - BAPTIZÔ: STUDI KATA DARI PERJANJIAN BARU YUNANI

"βαπτιζω – BAPTIZÔ", future " βαπτισω - BAPTISÔ", dari kata 'βαπτω BAPTÔ', mencelup. Membenamkan, mencelupkan, menenggelamkan untuk maksus religius, membanjiri, memenuhi, membaptiskan.


* Yohanes 1:25

Ayat di atas menulis "melakukan pembasuhan tangan", ' πυγμη νιψωνται τας χειρας - PUGMÊ NIPSÔNTAI TAS KHEIRAS', harfiah membasuh tangan hingga ke siku tangan, terjemahan dari kata "νιπτω – NIPTÔ", membasuh sebagian tubuh seperti muka, tangan, kaki, dan lain-lain.


* Markus 7:4
LAI TB, dan kalau pulang dari pasar mereka juga tidak makan kalau tidak lebih dahulu 'membersihkan dirinya'. Banyak warisan lain lagi yang mereka pegang, umpamanya hal 'mencuci' cawan, kendi dan perkakas-perkakas tembaga.
KJV, And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

Berbeda dengan Markus 7:3 sebelumnya, kata "membersihkan diri" dan "mencuci" menggunakan kata "βαπτιζω – BAPTIZÔ", mencelup. Ini menunjukkan bahwa mencuci tangan dilakukan dengan mencelupkannya ke dalam wadah berisi air.

Inilah yang dijelaskan oleh Petrus bahwa orang non-Yahudi di Kaisaria juga dibaptis dalam Roh Kudus.

i. Baptisan dalam Roh Kudus adalah perlengkapan Kristus bagi mereka yang benar-benar percaya sebagai anggota tubuhnya.


j. Kata kerja "εβαπτισθημεν - EBAPTISTHÊMEN" dalam berikut ini merujuk kepada "semua" orang percaya pada segala waktu. Hal ini dilakukan oleh Allah untuk membentuk tubuh kerohanian Yesus Kristus atau tubuh seluruh orang percaya yaitu Gereja. Hal ini pula memenuhi janji Kristus untuk mengirimkan Roh Kudus kepada dunia dalam cara yang khusus.


* 1 Korintus 12:13
LAI TB, Sebab dalam satu Roh kita semua, baik orang Yahudi, maupun orang Yunani, baik budak, maupun orang merdeka, telah dibaptis menjadi satu tubuh dan kita semua diberi minum dari satu Roh.

[8] Secara metafora, kata kerja "βαπτιζω - BAPTIZÔ" diterjemahkan "membaptis", dan kata benda "βαπτισμα - BAPTISMA", "baptisan", digunakan dalam hubungannya dengan malapetaka, bencana, kesengsaraan, atau penderitaan.

[9] Rasul Paulus menggunakan kata "βαπτιζω – BAPTIZÔ" sebagai argumen untuk menghubungkan dengan adanya kebangkitan orang mati.


* 1 Korintus 15:29
LAI TB, Jika tidak demikian, apakah faedahnya perbuatan orang-orang yang dibaptis bagi orang mati? Kalau orang mati sama sekali tidak dibangkitkan, mengapa mereka mau dibaptis bagi orang-orang yang telah meninggal?
KJV, Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Sekedar menambahi apa yang disampaikan oleh BP

Dalam tulisan ini saya bermaksud meninjau dari sisi asal-usul dan latar belakang penggunaan kata ini, dan tidak ada kaitannya dengan metode baptis yang dilakukan saat ini.
Pembahasan saya berdasarkan text Yunani baik dalam kitab PB Yunani maupun kitab PL Yunani (LXX) serta tiga buah kamus sbb:

1. Strong's Concordance

Strong's Concordance yang disusun oleh sebuah team dibawah pengawasan James Strong. Tugas team ini adalah untuk mencari akar kata dari setiap kata yang ada di dalam kitab bible translasi versi King James Bible (KJV) yang ditelusuri balik kedalam bahasa Yunani (PB) dan Ibrani (PL). Hal ini bukan berarti saya KJV minded, namun saya sekedar mengambil manfaat dari konkordansi ini. Kata-kata yang ditelusuri adalah kata-kata yang bersifat unik dan bukan umum. Dari sana dihasilkan sebanyak 8674 buah akar kata bahasa Ibrani (PL) dan 5523 buah akar kata bahasa Yunani (PB). Masing-masing akar kata yang unik dan spesifik ini diberi nomor dan dikenal sebagai Strong’s Number. Untuk akar kata Ibrani diawali dengan karakter H (Hebrew) sedangkan akar kata Yunani diawali dengan karakter G (Greek)

2. Greek to Hebrew / Hebrew to Greek Dictionary

Untuk kamus versi ini, saya belum menemukan versi online nya, namun anda bisa instal versi offline nya disini
Kamus ini merupakan kamus yang disusun berdasarkan kitab bible versi Septuaginta (LXX) , yaitu kitab PL yang diterjemahkan kedalam bahasa Yunani atas perintah Ptolemy (Philadelphus II [285–247 BCE]). Dari kitab LXX yang berbahasa Yunani ini dicari padanannya dengan kitab PL dalam bahasa Ibrani

3. Kamus online modern sebagai pembanding

Kata ‘baptis’ yang ‘dipopulerkan’ oleh Yohanes Pembabtis ini telah dipakai sekitar 300 tahun sebelumnya yaitu didalam terjemahan kitab PL bahasa Ibrani ke dalam bahasa Yunani.

Didalam kitab tersebut, kata ‘baptis’ selalu dihubungkan dengan ketersediaan benda cair seperti :
1. Air baik air dalam suatu wadah maupun air yang mengalir ataupun di sungai
2. Minyak dalam suatu wadah
3. Darah yang ditampung dalam suatu wadah

(Exo 12:22)
And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.

(Lev 4:6)
And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the vail of the sanctuary.

(Lev 4:17)
And the priest shall diphis finger in some of the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, even before the vail.

‘Baptis’ dalam konteks waktu itu – seperti digunakan pada ayat-ayat diatas – adalah : mencelupkan ( dip ) sesuatu (hisop, jari, kaki, tangan, dll) kedalam zat cair tersebut sehingga :
1. Immerse (to wet –membasahi , to coated – melapisi, to cover-menyelimuti , completely-keseluruhan) – basah secara keseluruhan
2. Submerging (menutup, menyembunyikan, menaruh di bawah air)

Dalam ritual ‘baptis’ tersebut, ‘sesuatu’ yang dicelupkan ( dip - baptis ) tadi tidak memerlukan tindakan lain seperti : memerciki, menetesi, dan menyirami ‘sesuatu’ yang ‘dibaptis’.
Jadi secara literal tindakan ‘baptis’ tadi hanyalah mencelupkan.

Tindakan ‘baptis’ berbeda dengan :

Demikian akhir dari penjelasan asal-usul dan latar belakang penggunaan kata ‘baptis’.
Adapun makna ‘baptis’ saat yang ada saat ini adalah makna turunan/derivative dari makna ‘baptis’ pada mulanya. Makna baptis yang ada saat ini dipengaruhi oleh corak dan cara masing-masing denominasi gereja yang ada, bahkan sampai diadopsi oleh dunia sekuler :
Cara/metode baptis :
1. Percik/tetes
2. Selam
3. Siram
4. Memecahkan botol berisi air/anggur (biasanya dibunakan oleh dunia sekuler untuk meresmikan suatu produk – msal pesawat terbang, kapal laut atau peluncuran produk-produk baru lainnya)

Saya tidak mendefinisikan cara baptis mana yang benar dan mana yang salah, saya hanya menyajikan makna asal dari ‘baptis’ itu sendiri.

Pada suatu hari di sebuah kost-kost an para pekerja kantoran, sedang berkumpul beberapa orang eksekutif muda minuman yaitu dari produk : Sosro, Tehkita, Tebes, Greentea, Estea, Freshtea. Mereka sedang berdebat mengenai sebuah sobekan artikel Koran lama yang sangat menarik perhatian mereka.
Begini pertikannya :

“Pada hari yang terik itu, Presiden Soeharto dengan bangga menjamu tamunya dari Amerika Serikat yaitu Presiden Jimmy Carter dengan produk asli Indonesia yaitu teh botol.”

Mereka mempersoalkan dan saling mengklaim bahwa itu adalah produk teh botol mereka. Mana yang benar?

Secara definisi saat ini, mereka semua benar, sebab semua produk mereka adalah ‘teh botol’, namun teh botol saat ini telah menjadi nama generic, bukan nama/sebutan spesifik yang ada waktu istilah itu muncul pertama kali. Sedangkan dari sejarah kunjungan presiden AS, kita bisa melacak bahwa President Jimmy Carter menjabat sebagai president antara tahun 1977-1981, dan sementara itu ‘teh botol’ adalah sebutan spesifik untuk teh botol sosro waktu itu. Merk-merk lainnya baru muncul belakangan.
